Here’s what you need to know about the DORA DevOps research. It connected software delivery performance with business performance. Ten years ago we saw the ramp up of IT. Some companies were doing well and others not so much. DORA analyzed thousands of organizations survey responses and created a scorecard to evaluate indicators that drove business performance. It was the most comprehensive research on what drives software delivery performance that has ever been done. The end result was a set of 4 metrics enabled by 24 DevOps capabilities. Commonly referred to now as the DORA metrics.

  1. deployment frequency (DF)
  2. lead time for changes (MLT)
  3. mean time to recovery (MTTR)
  4. change failure rate (CFR)

Here’s a great resource to checkout if you’re just getting started. But what does this mean for you and your team? Each of these metrics represent a potential barrier to market for your business. In other words, companies that view DevOps as a core business function will have a better chance of being successful. The ability to bring new software products / features to market quickly while keeping production costs low, and team morale high will be a competitive advantage… for those who invest in this core function.

If there is one thing we’ve learned on this journey it’s that your approach is going to be custom for your needs. However the first step in every journey is to create visibility through reporting.

This provides you with a foundation to track and measure improvements. We looked for alternatives to help build reports while providing the flexibility required to cater it to our needs. The problem was we couldn’t find anything at a reasonable price point. That journey led us to create appflo.io. A connector that automates your data sync between Jira and Smartsheet. This provides you the flexibility to structure your own reports. If you’re interested in taking the next step then check out our FREE Trial!
